Bronx Theatre Workshop is the first theatre education nonprofit created for the youth of the South Bronx. Our accessible, ensemble-based programs center the experiences of K-12 students in the South Bronx.

Founded by theatre instructor Melanie Harrison-Milton, Bronx Theatre Workshop is built on three beliefs: that community is created through collaboration, that young people deserve to be seen whole, and that the joy of performance — once felt — stays with you for life.

In August 2026, we are launching an expanded version of our pilot program: the Summer Intensive. Over two weeks, Summer Intensive students dive into musical theatre style singing and choreography. Students also write and direct their own scenes, which they perform in the culminating showcase. Bolstered by ensemble building games and improvisation exercises, students walk away with a soaring sense of confidence and community.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Bronx Theatre Workshop is designed for young people in the SOUTH Bronx and surrounding communities who are ready to find their voice, tell their stories, and discover what they're capable of.

Students learn the fundamentals of improvisation, musical theater performance, and collaborative playwriting. Working in ensembles, they analyze themes from established works, develop original scenes, and rehearse and perform material that is entirely their own — written, directed, and performed by the students themselves.

Every session is designed to build more than artistic skill. Through facilitated exercises rooted in acceptance, active listening, and ensemble principles, students strengthen self-awareness, develop a sense of belonging, and build the confidence to show up — on stage and off.

At the close of each cycle, students present their work in a public showcase — a celebration of what they've created together. These performances are open to families, community members, and the broader public, and reflect the full arc of each group's creative journey.

THE INSPIRATION

When a prestigious performing arts middle school admitted one of Melanie's brilliant 5th grade students, she could not secure the free busing he needed to attend. This was just the first of many roadblocks her students, their families, and Melanie would encounter when searching for arts opportunities outside of school hours.

Enter: Bronx Theatre Workshop

Youth theatre programs in NYC are usually based in Manhattan, for a steep price, and geared toward older students.

Here's what Bronx Theatre Workshop is doing differently:

  • Our programs are always based in the South Bronx

  • Our programs are FREE as often as possible

  • Once a student becomes involved with Bronx Theatre Workshop, they can stay for good. Our students grow with us.

  • We don’t wait to find the “high school theatre kids."              Our programs start at the elementary level.

  • With South Bronx students taking center stage, we celebrate and affirm their language, culture, and experiences.

WHAT WE'RE AIMING FOR
Build Creativity.

Students learn to improvise, perform, write, and direct — developing real skills across acting, singing, and dance in an ensemble setting.
Tell Original Stories.

Every cycle culminates in work that is entirely student-created. Participants analyze themes, develop characters, and bring original scenes to life on stage.
Grow Confident People.
Through structured social-emotional practice, students build self-awareness, find their voice, and develop the confidence to show up — in the room and beyond it.
Create Real Belonging.

Ensemble work is community work. Students learn to listen, collaborate, and hold space for one another — skills that extend well past the stage.
Connect The Bronx.

Public performances open the work to families, neighbors, and community —
turning student achievement into a shared moment for the people who matter most.
Open Doors.

We don't just run a program. We give students a pathway — to continued arts education, to creative community, and to a fuller sense of what they're capable of.
MEET THE DIRECTOR
Untitled (1).png

For over a decade, Melanie Harrison-Milton has created meaningful, accessible arts experiences for thousands of students across New York. In 2019, she founded the theatre program at PS 294: The Walton Avenue School and became the Bronx’s first ever IB: Primary Years Programme theatre teacher.

In honor of her innovative curriculum and community-engaged program model, Melanie was selected to be a FLAG Award semifinalist. As a workshop facilitator, she helps fellow arts educators better meet the needs of diverse elementary learners.

Melanie’s work as a youth theatre director has been recognized by the Bronx Borough Arts Festival, CNY Arts, and Disney’s Broadway Junior. In 2025, she founded Bronx Theatre Workshop, the first theatre education nonprofit created for the youth of the South Bronx.

Melanie holds a BA in Drama & English from Vassar College and an MA in Educational Theatre from NYU Steinhardt.

Every Kid Deserves a Stage

Every dollar given to Bronx Theatre Workshop is an investment in a young person's ability to express themselves, connect with others, and see themselves as capable of something extraordinary.

Theatre is not a luxury. For many of the students we serve, BTW is their first real encounter with creative freedom —

a space where their voice is not just permitted but essential. Your support makes that space possible.

When you give to BTW, you fund more than performances. You fund the sessions where a student finds their footing for the first time. The rehearsal where a group of strangers becomes an ensemble. The moment a young person walks offstage and knows what they're made of.

The youth of the South Bronx are waiting in the wings. Your gift helps us raise the curtain.
