ART AS MEDICINE

HELPING CHILDREN RECOVER FROM WAR

Blue Sky Ukraine was a multi-year, volunteer-led initiative that used arts therapy to help Ukrainian children process the deep emotional wounds of war. Created by Opus 1 Foundation in the wake of mass displacement, the program combined humanitarian aid with trauma-informed creative expression to support the mental health of the country’s most vulnerable youth.

Operating across three sites in western Ukraine, Blue Sky Ukraine delivered structured therapy, community-based workshops, and capacity-building training for local educators and therapists. Through painting, music, movement, and storytelling, the program fostered emotional resilience, restored hope, and laid the groundwork for long-term healing. It reached over 41,000 children and trained more than 140 professionals, offering a replicable model for post-crisis recovery through the arts.
